About this School Project (3rd Grade - Mehndi Hand Designs)
Third grade continued their unit of how Art is Everywhere in different cultures. For this part of the unit, we looked at the Mehndi hand art of Pakistan. We learned that Mehndi is like henna temporary tattoos in that an organic paste is squeezed through a thin tube on the hands, arms, and sometimes feet of Pakistani ladies and girls for special occasions like weddings. The organic paste has natural dyes that soak into the skin. When the paste has adequately soaked into the skin it is washed off leaving the beautifully designed patterns soaked onto the skin. Using this knowledge, students traced their hands and a bit of their arms onto paper. The hands were painted with skin tones of the student's choosing, as well as the background. Once the paint had dried, students used colored Sharpies to draw designs on their hands inspired by actual Mehndi designs.
