About this School Project (304 Surfers)
To tie in with their classroom learning about extreme environments and Japanese art, the students studied the composition of Hokusai's Great Wave print. They practiced drawing renderings of his print, but then I let them get creative with the lines making their own wave shapes. They practiced using their brush in a sumi-e motion to use as few brushstrokes as possible, and they tried to use this method to gain more control over their brushes. I had them add bright, warm colors to the sky to brighten it up and create contrast. They added surfers just for fun.
