About this School Project (2nd Grade Gyotaku Fish Prints)
Students learned about Gyotaku (Japanese, from gyo "fish" + taku "stone impression"). Gyotaku is the traditional Japanese method of printing fish, a practice that dates back to the mid-1800s. This form of nature printing was used by fishermen to record their catches but has also become an art form of its own. Students painted a background for their fish print using tints and shades of blue watercolor paint, and drew seaweed and other underwater features on their background. Next students used rubber fish molds and printing ink to print a fish on their artwork. Last, students added color to their fish print to further enhance the texture and color of their fish.
