About this School Project (Giant Cactus)
Kindergartners read the story "A Day in the Desert." All of the artwork in the book was done by first graders....how neat!! We looked at different kinds of cacti and even learned that some animals like to eat them, such as the tortoise. For our lesson, we drew a giant cactus with oil pastel and designed it with lines, shapes, and other designs. We painted watercolor over our cactus and discovered that oil and water are not friends. The oil in the pastel resists the water, so you can still see all of the oil pastel! Magic! (and science!) We cut our cactus out and glued it to a background. To finish it off, we used cut triangle paper for the cactus needles. Beautiful job!
