About this School Project (2nd Grade Clay Word Reliefs : Inspired by Robert Indiana)
Second graders looked at the "LOVE" sculpture and painting created by Robert Indiana. They compared and contrasted the two artworks and then started to brainstorm a four letter inspirational word for their clay project.
Students used the slab and coil methods to create their clay sculptures, and also added texture to their slabs to create visual interest.
Once fired, students created an oil pastel/watercolor resist to emphasize their texture and talked about the importance of contrast when selecting colors for their words and their backgrounds.
