About this School Project (The Real Me: Mixed Media Self-Portrait inspired by Vanessa Brantley Newton)
Students learned how to create a stylized self-portrait integrating their physical appearance with personal symbols and words to represent what makes them special (heart & head). Students created an interactive, cartoon-like self-portrait, explored mixing colors for skin tones, and showed attitudes & attributes that are unique to their identity (“who you say you are, who others say you are, and who you desire to be” - Dr. Gholdy Muhammad, 2020). Illustrator Vanessa Brantley-Newton served as inspiration, as students observed and applied her process for mixed media collage in their representation of their inner self.
Ask: What is a self-portrait?
What are some of the tricks you learned for drawing the head, eyes, nose, mouth, etc.?
How did you represent who you are on the inside through symbols, text, and imagery?
