About this School Project (1st Grade - Water Lilies)
Our first graders beOur first graders began by talking about Claude Monet and his painting, ‘The Japanese Footbridge’. Their lesson was inspired by Monet’s beautiful water lily paintings. Students created their backgrounds and lily pads by coloring their papers using different shades of blue, purple and green markers. The students were amazed to see how the marker lines were transformed as the papers were sprayed with water to help give it a watercolor/tie-dye effect. Once the papers were dry, the first graders cut out their lily pads and glued them onto their water background. Then students drew 3 different sizes of petal templates and cut out their template tracers. The first graders traced each size petal template 6 times, resulting in 18 petals total on their papers. Students cut out all of their petals, sorting them as they were cutting. Now it was time to assemble the water lilies. They started by gluing and spacing out the 6 large petals onto the lily pad, then the 6 medium petals and finally the 6 small petals. Once all the petals were attached, they cut fringe from a strip of yellow paper and rolled it up tightly. I then used hot glue to glue the yellow roll to become the center of the flowers. The flower petals were rolled to help create the 3D element in the flowers. The first graders worked on their fine motor skills while using scissors and glue. This lesson focused on 5 of the elements of art - line, shape, color, form and texture. Well done first grade artist!
