Artist Statement (what Caroline13881 said about their artwork)
I learned about folk art, symmetry and unity. At first, I thought it was very hard but at the end it was easy. You should try it!
About this School Project (2nd Grade Symmetrical Insects)
2nd Graders began this project by comparing a group of folk art insects. Students noticed that while each had the characteristics of realistic insects (having three body segments and six legs ), flowers, leaves and other fun shapes and colors were added that made them look decorative. Students also noticed the symmetry in the insects’ bodies as well. Taking inspiration from these works, students created their own version of a folk art inspired, symmetrical insect. Students used a transfer technique to make their work the same in both sides, then colored their work with oil pastels. To complete their work, students made crayon rubbings with texture plates followed by a watercolor resist to fill their background.
