About this School Project (1st Grade Mosaics)
First-grade students explored mosaics as an art form and learned that the ancient Romans began creating them around 5,000 years ago to decorate their walls, floors, and ceilings with intricate designs and images. Mosaics continue to be made today using materials such as stone, glass, tile, and paper. To create their own, students began by drawing the parts of a flower and outlining them with black paper tiles. They then added color by gluing small paper squares in the center, petals, and background, carefully placing each tile close to, but not overlapping, the next. Their patience and craftsmanship were impressive, and we think the ancient Romans would be proud!
