About this School Project (Kinkade Lighthouse)
Students heard about the life and artwork of Thomas Kinkade. Thomas Kinkade is known as the "painter of light," because of the use of his bright colors and vibrant contrast in his realistic paintings.
Students viewed his paintings of landscapes including his lighthouse paintings to inspire a lighthouse drawing using oil pastel. We defined contrast as a principle of art showing emphasis in differences such as light and dark colors. Students began drawing a lighthouse with an ocean and rocks in the surrounding landscape on black construction paper and practiced blending different colors of oil pastel to create value and contrast to show light and shadow.
