About this School Project (“Let’s Go, Hugo!” Angela Dominguez inspired Artwork)
Author, illustrator, and artist, Angela Dominguez visited Boulevard on March 20th, 2024. In honor of her visit, students in 1st and 2nd grade learned about her background, listened to the story "Let's Go, Hugo!" and drew along with her video tutorial to create her characters, Hugo and Lulu. Hugo, a bird living in Paris, is afraid to fly. Lulu tries to encourage him to fly with her to see the Eiffel Tower, but he comes up with a variety of excuses throughout the day for why he can't fly with her to see it. Eventually, Hugo admits that he is scared to fly and has to be a risk-taker to learn how.
After creating the characters, students were asked to be an illustrator like Dominguez and add their own personal details, thinking about how they would illustrate Hugo being a risk-taker. What is something new or different that you would have Hugo and Lulu do? How will they be risk-takers and gain courage from the support of a friend? Some students finished their pieces to be displayed for the visit, while others needed more time to create (as an artist herself, we think she will understand that all artwork takes time!). All illustrated works will be shared digitally with Angela Dominguez through our Artsonia gallery!
