About this School Project (4P Inspired by Ancient Chinese Art)
The fourth grade students learned about the difference between stylized and naturalistic representation by viewing ancient Chinese guardian sculptures. Guardian figures would be placed outside specific places in ancient China in order to guard those locations. The fierce expressions of the guardian figures were represented in these relief sculptures. Students began with sketches, trying to add at least five different areas of stylization. They sculpted their pieces having images from art of various cultures that feature stylization. Students chose to use either warm or cool colors, and mixed them with each other and with brown, trying to create many different values and colors with those hues. We also focused on tints and shades (a color is a shade when black is added to it; when white (or water) is added to create a lighter value, it is a tint.). Their pieces should demonstrate a variety of mixed colors. Fourth grade students are becoming more adept at their craftsmanship, and also learned about some new techniques. I am so proud of the amazing work they did, of their perseverance in completing their pieces, and of the expressive pieces of art that they created!
