About this School Project (Face Jugs)
Face Jugs are based on a tradition that was brought to the Carolinas on an illegal slave trade ship called the Wanderer. Many of the slaves from that ship were made to work at a potter's mill, and they would use leftover clay to make jugs with grotesque faces and hide them inside larger pieces for firing. Face jugs were used as makeshift grave markers for other slaves, and they were designed to be ugly so that they could scare away the Devil himself. We designed our own face jugs with the motto of, "If your neighbor calls it UGLY, it's a compliment!"
