About this School Project (2nd Grade - Space: Symmetrical Monoprint Abstract)
The students watched a read aloud video, Seeing Symmetry, by Loreen Leedy, and learned the symmetrical terms from mirror image symmetry, to rotational symmetry. This project focuses on the line of symmetry and creating an abstract monoprint. First, the students chose a background color, then folded it in half either vertically or horizontally. Next, they picked the colors of paint to use by only painting lines and shapes on one side of the folded paper. Finally, to print on the other side of the paper, the second graders folded their paper over while the paint was still wet. When they opened up their paper, ta-da...an abstract image to marvel over! Some images the students created were not meant to be realistic, however, their imaginations took over and they enjoyed guessing what their creation might become. Enjoy these symmetrical and colorful monoprints!
