About this School Project (2024 Chinese New Year Dragons)
Students learned that the dragon is the animal represented in the Chinese zodiac for 2024. We identified the visual differences between Eastern and Western dragons.
Students practiced making marks on paper with Chinese calligraphy brushes, viewed examples of Chinese ink paintings and Sumi-e, and were introduced to the philosophy of "saying a lot with a little."
We also reviewed the element of VALUE, which refers to Dark and Light. Students were encouraged to create 2 or more levels of Value in their paintings.
They learned that the red symbol stamp found on most Eastern ink paintings is called a "CHOP," which is the artist's signature.
Finally, the class created a number of dragon paintings, chose their favorite, and added a "chop" that included their initials.
