About this School Project (Punched Tin Lanterns)
Punched tin is a functional art form that was popular in colonial America and could also be found in Ireland and Scotland. Tin was formed into a cylinder with a cone on top, and decorations were punched all around to provide holes for which the light could pass. Students made radial designs in pieces of aluminum, stretched the metal to make it protrude (called repousse), and lastly, punched holes all around their design with thumbtacks.
