About this School Project (1st Grade Charley Harper Cardinals)
Students were introduced to the artist Charley Harper for this mixed media project. Cardinals were the focus of several of Harper's pieces of art and they were fun to recreate! Students studied shape, color, and line to cut, glue, draw, and paint to finish their Harper-inspired bird. They created birch trees by scraping brown paint in columns, then cutting to form trees and branches. They made symetrical birds by folding construction paper to make teardrop/raindrop shapes for the birds. They folded and cut paper to make symetrical birdbaths also. Oil pastel was added for smudgy lines on the birdbath to give it depth and shadows and "make it look old" as one student put it! QTips and white paint were provided for the final touch--SNOW!! Some students added extra snow on the birdbath or tree limbs. This project took 3 class periods. Each piece is unique and beautiful! It was a project that was a stretch for first graders, but they rose to the challenge!
