About this School Project (Grade 5- “Amate” Paintings)
Students viewed actual examples of Amate bark paintings from Mexico which are a traditional art form still created today. The bark paper is made from the pulp of fig and mulberry trees by the Otomi Indians and purchased by other villages to create decorative, colorful paintings. Typical subjects are fanciful flowers, birds, animals and scenes of village life. The background is usually not painted to display the textured handmade paper. Fifth graders created their own colorful compositions on pressed fiber paper.
