About this School Project (Kindergarten - Penguins)
The Kindergarten classes had a lot of fun learning about penguins and creating their Penguins on Parade. To make the penguin, each student received a piece of black and white paper. I showed the children how to make a large letter “U” on the black paper and a smaller letter “U” on the white paper. The black and white paper was then cut out and glued together. For the wings (called ‘flippers’ on penguins), I showed the children how to fold a piece of black paper in half and draw a skinny letter “D”. They cut out the letter “D” from the folded paper for the two wings. For the feet, the children drew two squares with zig-zags on the top and cut out both shapes. Lastly, two white circles were cut out for the eyes and a black sharpie was used for the center of the eyes. The kindergartners then painted the background in a variety of bright colors using horizontal stripes and completed their colorful penguins by painting snow onto the background. This lesson added building blocks in drawing, cutting, gluing and painting. The students also demonstrated an understanding of the terms collage and balance. Way to go kindergarten artists!
