About this School Project (1Be I CAN Print! I CAN be Inspired! I CAN Make Connections!)
For this first grade project, first grade students created symmetrical prints of their names, then added details using Sharpie and construction paper crayons to create an insect. They viewed insect art, as well as photographs of insects to inspire them. They made connections between the art and the photographs of actual insects, and we discussed how insects need to move, grasp objects, protect themselves, and seek/take in food, water and air. They had a wonderful time designing their creatures! They couldn't decide which part they enjoyed the most; there were many "OOOOH!s" and "AHHHs" as they printed their names (one line at a time, with tempera paint) then they couldn't wait to add interesting details.
This art project ties into the first grade science curriculum, specifically "Life Science 1.LS.1.1: different animals use their body parts and senses in different ways to see, hear, grasp objects, protect themselves, move from place to place, and seek, find, and take in food, water, and air."
