About this School Project (1st Grade Story Quilts)
Students in 1st grade are exploring the question…
“How do artists come up with ideas?”
After reading Tar Beach, by Faith Ringgold, students explored their memories for inspiration to create art. Students selected a memory, and then included the following in a pencil drawing: their body in the memory, taking part in whatever the memory shows. Students used markers to add color, and included details from their memory: the color of the walls, the daytime sky, an amusement park, or whatever environment they were in at that time.
Students then wrote a description of their memory in their best writing and spelling.
After finishing the drawing and written portion of the project, students added fabric squares to the edges of their paper reminiscent of a quilt.
