About this School Project (5th grade Tessellations)
Students in 5th grade created tessellations!
What is a tessellation?
A tessellation is a repeating pattern of shapes. In order for a pattern to tessellate, all the shapes have to be touching each other with no overlapping and no gaps. The shapes lock into each other in an infinitely repeating tile pattern.
Students were also introduced to the work of Dutch graphic artist M.C. Escher, who is regarded as the father of modern tessellations. They watched an animation created by his artwork "Sky and Water," as well as examples of the tile work in Alhambra, Spain that inspired Escher's tessellations.
Students created a tessellation stencil using a square tile of paper. Next, students sketched 3 or more ideas for turning their tessellation shape into something recognizable (i.e. a monster, a bird, a tree). Students transferred their chosen design to a final piece where they were asked to outline in sharpie, and add color in an alternating color pattern.
