About this School Project (Las Calacas)
In South American culture, a "CALACA" is the image of a skeleton, often portrayed doing everyday activities to illustrate the Mexican belief that the joys of life continue after death.
Students discussed the holiday "DIA DE LOS MUERTOS" or "Day of the Dead," which many were familiar with after watching the movie Coco or The Book of the Dead." Some student's families celebrate this holiday and were able to share personal knowledge.
Students assembled a paper skeleton and used construction paper to COLLAGE clothing and other details onto their artwork. Because artwork from this culture is COLORFUL and DECORATIVE, they added details with ribbons, gems, glitter glue, or other EMBELLISHMENTS.
