About this School Project (3S Thiebaud; Cylinders, Value, Tints and Shades, Oh My!)
Third Grade students viewed the amazing cakes of artist Wayne Thiebaud. They learned how to draw layered cakes using parallel lines and ovals. They were introduced to the concept of "value" in art, learning about the terms: Hue; Tints; and Shades. They learned about blending oil pastels trying to use various tints and shades of a hue in order to create visual form/a realistic looking cake. Those were brought home. They are next working on using tempera paint in creating their amazing cakes. Last, they learned ways to decorate their cakes. They rose to the challenge beautifully! I am posting images of the cakes prior to detail being added, so you are able to see how they responded to 1) drawing cylinders/layered cakes; and 2) blending different values to create visual form.
