About this School Project (Grasslands)
K-6th grade students had a central theme for their projects: the Grasslands. They watched videos, learned about different habitats, plants, and animals that make up the grasslands, and then each grade created a project within that theme.
K & 1 created paper collage Sunflowers. They made texture rubbings on their paper for the center of the sunflowers as well as for the grass. Then, they used simple shapes to create their sunflowers, stems, leaves, and insects. Last, they crinkled their paper for the grass and created space by making their flower petals stand out from the paper.
2 & 3 made Prairie Dogs in a landscape that shows space by incorporating a horizon line and a foreground/middle ground/background. They created texture by making their dirt mounds bumpy and creating value by outlining their shapes by pressing down hard with their crayons and then using that same crayon to color in the shape lightly.
4th grade made Grasshoppers using oil pastels to create highlights and shadows to give their insects form. They learned how to layer oil pastels and blend them in various ways and used complementary colors to create contrast and make their grasshoppers stand out.
5 & 6th created Grassland Landscapes, which used a horizon line to create space. They used oil pastels and began filling their landscapes with light colors and then coloring over them with darker ones. They learned the sgraffito technique and scratched various lines and patterns to show the contrast in
