Artist Statement (what Xueen1 said about their artwork)
My inspiration for creating this piece of artwork was the problem of pollution in real life.
I used scale and proportion in my sculpture by carefully measuring and comparing my bases before adding pipe cleaners.
I used cardboard and plastic mesh as a base for the lilypad, and tinfoil as the base for the water lily. The base for the eye was a wooden bowl; after securing the bases together, I covered everything in pipe cleaners before slathering on black paint and black glitter.
If I were to create this artwork again, I would glue the petals together to secure them.
I feel like I did well with managing my time and creating a pleasing art piece, I could have added gloss to the eye to make it more shiny.
About this School Project (Sculpture: Pipe Cleaner Sculpture)
Students learned about the woven pipe cleaner art of artist Don Porcella. They also learned about the principles of scale and proportion as they relate to sculpture. Each student designed an object of their choice to construct using pipe cleaners and built an armature to support their work. They were challenged to add to change something about their chosen object to give viewers a different perspective on they object. Enjoy this year's crop of pipe cleaner creations!
