About this School Project (4 Abstract Embroidery)
INTRO:
Students were first introduced to abstract art. They watched a video and viewed a number of famous abstract artists. They learned that abstract art can be objective (based on an object) or non-objective depicting only shapes, colors and patterns.

PROJECT:
Class 1: Students began by making 4 rough drafts of designs using lines and shapes. Once they chose one design, they colored some areas in with markers.

Class 2: Using a piece of chalk pastel, students drew their design on a piece of colored burlap. Next, they painted in some areas with acrylic paint (referencing their rough draft).

Class 3: Students began embroidering. They learned how to thread their needle, make a knot on their yarn and create the running stitch.

Class 4: Students learned new stitches such as the back, blanket, split and french knot. They outlined their boarder as well as their designs. They filled in some areas with other stitches and some students even invented their own stitches!

Class 5: When finished, students created a border for their design using construction paper and oil pastels. Their final abstract embroidery was hot glued onto their border.
