About this School Project (Winslow Homer Sailboats)
Students heard about the life and artwork of Winslow Homer. They viewed images of his seascape paintings and compared the calm sea paintings with the ones that showed more motion with waves crashing. We discussed how Homer created the illusion of motion in his paintings. For their project, students created a wax resist seascape painting using watercolor paint and crayons. We defined warm and cool colors and used them to paint the sky and ocean. Students used motion line with white crayon to make the rapid waves. They used construction paper to make the hull and sail of their boat and a popscicle stick for the mast.
