About this School Project (Japanese Kokeshi Dolls)
ABOUT KOKESHI DOLLS
KOKESHI are wooden dolls from JAPAN that have no arms or legs. They are generally handmade and have simple features and clothing. Kokeshi are purchased as collectables, ornaments and are also a popular tourist souvenir.
The simplicity and cuteness factor of this kokeshi project make it a great lesson for your first-grade artists to not only learn about a popular doll from Japan, but also the culture of kawaii. After cutting out a symmetrical doll body, students will get to choose how to draw their kokeshi’s hair and clothing. Then they’ll add a few circles and lines to finish their doll with a recognizably kawaii facial expression.
Project Goals:
Today I will learn about KOKESHI from JAPAN so that I CAN create a paper version of one.
Today I will learn about SYMMETRY so that I CAN use cut SHAPES that are the same on both sides.
Today I will learn about FACIAL EXPRESSIONS so that I CAN show an emotion on the face of my KOKESHI by using the KAWAII style.
