About this School Project (2nd Grade Reggie Laurent Inspired Abstract Art with Balance)
Second-grade students looked at examples of abstract art by artist Reggie Laurent. They identified the form of each work of art and reflected on the purpose of the paintings.
Students recognized Laurent used a lot of bright colors, lines, and shapes, filling his whole canvas. Laurent says he thinks of his artwork as a “big playground that I can run around all day and never get tired” and paints by “intuition.” Students were courageous and risk-taking artists as they created their own abstract painting or drawing, working on it for two art classes, keeping their artwork balanced, and creating whatever lines, shapes, or colors came to their imagination! Artists were working towards Ohio Visual art benchmarks and being able to:
2.1RE Compare works of art using descriptive language.
2.3RE Share personal interpretations of works of art.
2.1PE Show perseverance in the creative process.
2.2PE Apply increasing skill in the appropriate use of materialsand tools.
2.3PE Produce works that intentionally incorporate the elementsof art
