About this School Project (Alma Thomas)
Alma Thomas was a painter best known for her abstract paintings that she painted later in life. Thomas worked as an art teacher for 35 years before retiring to work on her own art full time. Her paintings are full of color and energy despite the fact that she lived during a tumultuous period in history. At the age of 81 Alma Thomas was the first African American woman to have a solo show at the Whitney Museum of American Art. She was also the first African American woman to have her artwork hang in the White House.
