About this School Project (2nd Grade - Magnified Bugs)
Second grade continued their exploration of how "Art Expresses a Point of View" by learning about how some artists zoom in to objects and observe their fine details. Similar to the last project, students took a birds eye view approach to creating a zoomed in view of insects and bugs. First, students chose a shade of brown or tan construction paper and sponge painted on a dirt/ground texture. Students then used green and yellow to paint blades of grass around the perimeter of the paper. While that was drying, students observed images of bugs zoomed in. They noticed how bugs are segmented into different parts. Using this information, they drew their own bugs to fit right up to the edges of the magnifying glass. After outlining their bugs with Sharpie markers, students used their choice of coloring materials to add color to their bugs and blend the color. Next, students used templates to create a magnifying glass out of construction paper. Bugs were then glued to the grass paper with the magnifying glass around them. Finally, students added smaller bugs outside of the magnifying glass to show the difference of sizes when they are magnified and when they aren't.
