About this School Project (3rd grade Monochromatic Landscape Painting)
Students in 3rd grade drew and painted landscapes that show depth! Students looked at photographs of landscapes and observed atmospheric perspective: a natural phenomenon in which colors and objects appear lighter in color and value relative to their distance from the viewer. The further away an object is, the lighter it appears. Students were then guided through a landscape drawing and were asked to create a drawing of a landscape on canvas with layers of space (foreground, middleground, background), and show atmospheric perspective using a single color (each layer gets lighter in value). Students could also include a detail drawing large in the foreground, such as a tree or bush, and a moon or sun in the sky.
