About this School Project (3rd Grade Creates Their Own Style!)
The K-4 How We Express Ourselves art planner focuses on how "Artists’ choice & arrangement of the elements of art create an artistic style!" Students observed Howardena Pindell's of "Untitled #5B (Krakatoa)" 2007, "Untitled #4D" 2009, and Untitled, 1969 noticing how she used the different elements of art (line, shape, color, value, texture, form, and space.) They heard her perspective as she went through different styles. "I make drawings intentionally to destroy them. That’s not true of my earlier work where I made drawings that stood on their own merit. Now the drawings I do are very abstract & playful. I destroy them & re-assemble them." Students created 2-3 paintings. They decided if they wanted the paintings to be expressive, abstract, representational, or another style. They chose the colors, values, & textures that they liked! During the following art classes, students looked at more of Pindell's artworks & identified how she created movement, emphasis, or unity (3 of the principles of art and design.) Students then chose one of the principles they wanted to create. They added to, deconstructed, or combined their original paintings to create that principle using their own style! Ask your student which principle of art they created! How did they do it? What are they most proud of? Students were working toward Ohio Visual Art Standards 3.2PE Demonstrate expressive and purposeful use of materials and tools & 3.3PE Use principles of design to arrange the elements of art.
