About this School Project (Animal Face Collage)
4th graders worked very very hard on these beautiful animal face collages! We started by using various scrapbook/collage papers as well as our own painted papers we made with watercolor and oil pastel. We ripped and glued our papers in a radial direction as a background for our collage. We discussed how to use the glue and how much and talked about color themes and contrast of patterns.
We then drew our eyes/noses and beaks depending on which animal we chose. We used black paint and made sure to include the appropriate pupil with reflective areas. For example, the pupil of a cat might differ from the pupil of a dog. After they were dry, we blended oil pastel colors and used the color wheel for guidance using colors near each other. The lightest color needed to be next to the pupil in order to create contrast. We stuck with neutral colors for anyone doing a beak.
After we cut them out and glued them on, we were ready to paint the rest! We definitely had a lot of discussion and demonstrations of various animal face features and how to draw them as well as texture. There were many examples around the room of cat, dog, owl, eagle, fox, and tiger faces. Students created tones of gray using black and white paint and tried to include all 3 colors. The most challenging part was getting students to trust their judgement but I believe everyone was very proud of all their work in the end!
