About this School Project (1 - Japanese Cherry Blossoms)
In the spring, thousands of people fill Japanese parks and hold feasts under the flowering trees. Because of their cultural importance, most public schools in Japan have cherry blossom trees outside of them.
Cherry blossoms have been used extensively in Japanese art for hundreds of years. Most cherry blossom flowers only last a few weeks, at most. According to the Buddhist tradition, the brief beauty of the blossoms symbolizes the transient nature of life.
For this project, first graders created a scroll-like painting of a cherry blossom branch, complete with pink blooms. First, we created a blue-sky background with watercolor paint, leaving a white circle to represent a faint full moon silhouette. Next, students blew India ink across their paper with a straw to create “branches”. It took a little practice to get the hang of blowing across the paper instead of down at it. Once the branches were dry, pink flowers were added with the student’s choice of either paint or pink tissue paper.
