About this School Project (Chilean Arpillera)
Description:
The second grade class discussed and viewed a Chilean folk art form called arpillera. An arpillera is similar to a quilt because it is made of sewn fabric. However, they were originally made by poor women as a way to protest the government for the way they treated the Chilean people during the 1970s-80s. Nowadays arpilleras are created to show hope for a better future.
For their project, students had to create their own arpillera with paper, paint, yarn, and puffy paint. Students practiced painting different textures on construction paper. They drew a background with oil pastels to make the sky. The painted paper was torn to look like the Andes Mountains and layered to create depth and added three origami houses. Finally they wove yarn using the whip stitch and added puffy paint to make the paper look like sewn fabric.
