About this School Project (4 Graphic Design: Your Favorite Place)
This project was inspired by the work of Cincinnati artist Charley Harper. We looked at his “Ohio” design and discussed: why he used the symbols he chose; how he was able to keep the design legible; what a graphic designer does; how Harper stylized and simplified the images; how geometric shapes were used.
Students then brainstormed their favorite places. They were encouraged to choose a place that they have actually been for the place option. They wrote down a list of things that remind them of that place, and then began to figure out which symbols could stand for letters in their word. We talked about typography, and the use of a baseline, middle line and top line. Students were asked to use all upper case letters, or capitalize the first letter and then use lower case (consistency is key!).
