About this School Project (2nd Grade Move Your Mood Artwork Inspired by Guatemalan Worry Dolls)
Students identified ways they have learned to move their mood from scared to calm. How We Express Ourselves is "an inquiry into the ways in which we discover and express ideas, feelings, nature, culture, beliefs and values." Some techniques students identified that help them move their mood are a part of the Mercer school culture while others are a part of their family culture and were learned at home. Some cultures use art or objects artists have made to express or change their mood. “According to the tradition of the Mayans from the Guatemalan highlands, when children are scared or have nightmares, they give them worry dolls before they go to sleep. Then, they put them under the pillow, and when they wake up, their worries are gone. The doll worries about the problem instead of the person, allowing the person to sleep peacefully.” (exploringyourmind.com).
Students learned new techniques with yarn and pipe cleaners and made their own worry dolls and bags to take home. Students were working toward the following Ohio Visual
Art Standards as they were learning, reflecting, and creating:
2.1CO Recognize and discuss the different ways in which art communicates ideas and serves many purposes.
& 2.1PR Show perseverance and motivation in the creative process.
