About this School Project (GYOTAKU: Japanese Fish Printing [First Grade])
For the first unit in our ART OF THE WORLD curriculum, we're visiting Japan and exploring the practice of fish printing known as GYOTAKU. We'll learn about the practical purposes of Gyotaku (fisherman wanted a way to record their big fish catches! Photography was not yet invented) and take a peak into contemporary Gyotaku artist Rob Choi's studio as he makes one of his prints. We'll discuss the importance of fish in Japan's economy, cuisine, and holidays.
