About this School Project (Mexican Amate Bark Paintings)
The Otomi Indians in San Pablito, Mexico use the bark of the Jonote tree (similar to a Ficus) to make Papel Amate (Amate Bark). This tree grows in mountainous regions of Mexico. The bark is thin and tan. They strip the bark, boil in water then pound with a stone to soften. The bark is smoothed into trays and dried in the sun. After drying, artisans paint the paper with traditional images and scenes from everyday life such as weddings, harvest, religious customs as well as wildlife and exotic birds.
Project GOALS:
• Today I will learn about the MEXICAN culture of the OTOMI INDIANS and use their PAPEL AMATE to inspire my work of art.
• Today I will learn about TEXTURE, so that I CAN make my paper appear rough around the edges by carefully tearing along the sides.
• Today I will learn about LINE and SHAPE, so that I CAN draw Mexican folk art inspired PATTERNS around my border.
