About this School Project (Expressive Black Line Drawing)
Can you tell what mood this artist is trying to portray?
As part of a unit on expressing emotion and mood through art, the first lesson demonstrated how students studied line and practiced how they can draw expressive lines with a variety of materials such as ink, charcoal, black crayon, etc. to portray a specific mood.
In this second lesson, students brainstormed to generate a list of how certain colors make you feel and then created crayon drawings to depict how they felt while listening to a diverse selection of music such as Rhythm & Blues, Classical, Computer Generated music, Reggae, Steel Pan, French Nouvelle and Hawaiian music. Next, they produced a final painting inspired by Yo Yo Ma, which was created with lines made with black Sharpie and painted in a watercolor wash.
Next, artists created their own painted paper with tools other than a paintbrush; which they then ripped and cut to create a weather collage that portrays a specific mood. A single silhouette object was placed within the collage.
For the final piece, culminating this unit, artists used a variety of overlapping paper and collage materials to create an expressive mask.
