About this School Project (6-9 Europe: Barcelona Street Art inspired by Birdie)
Our first stop on our "art passport" this year is inspired by my recent trip to Barcelona, Spain. I was inspired by all the amazing street art, and fell in love with one character we kept seeing everywhere: Birdie! (Find Birdie on instagram @birdiebcn -- I have been sharing progress pictures on my instagram @mstessmakesamess and getting our classes connected with the artist via instagram too!)
Using Birdie, we discussed the difference between graffiti and street art/public art. Most importantly discussing the importance of permission when creating art in a public space.
Students were tasked to create an illustration that met the following criteria: 1. Focal Point: a happy animal character (birdie or one of their own creation); 2. An abstract art background (think lines, shapes and color) to fill the space of the paper; 3. Use of color: demonstrate knowledge of warm (reds, oranges, yellows) v. cool (greens, blues, purples) colors by coloring in their character with one group of colors and the background with the other group of colors; 4. Use of medium: maintaining the new alcohol markers and using them correctly to fill in the work completely; 5. As always, work completed to the best of their ability!
