About this School Project (2 - Chilean landscapes)
Second grade looked at and learned about arpilleras, which are hand embroidered landscape pictures made by women in Chile. Students went to 4 different stations to create textured paper using different painting techniques (sponge, paintbrush, scraping tools & cardboard scraps). Once dry, they tore and layered their papers to create a landscape. Next, they learned how to make origami houses and added those to their picture. Students were encouraged to use white oil pastels to add clouds to their sky, and to add a sun or a moon. Finally, the 2nd graders learned how to whip stitch the edges of their design and used puffy paint to add some 3-dimensional aspects to their picture.
