About this School Project (3-5 Ukrainian Sunflowers)
INTRO:
During this lesson students learned about the history of the National Flower of Ukraine; the sunflower. They learned that the sunflower has a long history in Ukraine having been used in clothing, furniture as well as being painted on walls. The Russian Czar, Peter the Great, brought them to Eastern Europe from the Netherlands in the 1500s. In Ukraine, the seeds are often fried in oil and are sprinkled with salt; the country's most popular snack.
Students also viewed the Sunflower artwork of famous artists such as Matisse, Monet, Van Gogh and Klimt, as well as the oil pastel sunflowers of contemporary artists. They noticed how each flower was unique and created in that artist's style just as they would soon create theirs.
PROJECT:
To create their flower, students referenced photos of a variety of types of sunflowers that incorporate unique colors, petals and seeds. They first drew their sunflower in pencil and then practiced a variety of oil pastel techniques such as creating gradients by overlapping colors, adding texture and also giving shapes and designs highlights and shadows.
