About this School Project (Geodes ROCK!)
The geode is Iowa's state rock. Many can be found around our state. As a kid, every spring I used to help pick up rocks from the fields so they would damage farm equipment. It was a job I didn't mind because sometimes I would find a geode!
To finish out the year and our learning about color, students created geode paintings. Students held real geodes to observe the layers of color and the crystal deposits in the center.
While most geode centers are neutral in color, this seemed like a great opportunity to learn about warm and cool color families.
Warm colors are the colors of the sun and fire: reds, oranges and yellows
Cool colors are the colors of sky, water, grass and mountains: blues, greens and purples
Neutral colors are the muted colors of the earth: browns, greys, white and black
Students chose warm or cool colors and made an organic shape in the middle of their board with a marker.
They drew outlines of that shape in the same color family. Browns, greys and blacks were added as well.
Students then used a paint brush with water, and traced over their drawn lines. The water made the marker lines bleed into one another, creating a feeling of layers and depth to their rock. Last, sand was added to the outside of the rock to represent the tough and deceiving outside of a geode. A little glitter was added to the inside to represent the crystals inside the geode.
