About this School Project (4th grade Circle Weaving)
4th graders created a circle weaving! Students participated in a discussion about the textiles that were traded on the Silk road, and looked at examples of silk, wool, hemp, cotton, and felt items from that time period. Many of these items were created using weaving techniques on a loom, so students created their own loom from a paper plate. They painted concentric circles around their “loom” and drew embellishments with a Sharpie marker using a pattern and/or repetition of lines and shapes. Next they strung their loom with a yarn color of their choice to create the “warp” strings. Last, they wove a circle in the middle of the loom with their weaving string, known as the “weft” string. Optional finishing touches, such as an outline around the loom, pom-poms, tassels or fringes were added to complete the weaving.
