About this School Project (1st Grade polymer clay snakes)
Polymer clay is a plastic clay that many artists like because it doesn't require a kiln, just a regular oven. It doesn't dry out like play doh, even when it is not placed in an airtight container. It comes in many colors, but colors can also be created by marbling and mixing colors.
Since these students have not used polymer clay before, we chose something simple. We conditioned the clay using acrylic rollers to flatten the clay so that it could be cranked through a pasta machine several times. This conditioning process makes the clay warm and soft. Students then rolled out clay like a sausages and twisted colors together several times. One end was shaped like the head; the other end was rolled thinner as the tail. Then a snake texture was added by rolling the coil on a mesh onion bag. Lastly eyes were added and a mouth was cut open. Students later made a garden for their snake to slither through the grass.
