About this School Project (Geometric Windows inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright (copy))
We started this project by looking at the architecture and window designs of Frank Lloyd Wright. We discussed the difference between horizontal and vertical lines, and practiced proficiency with a compass by drawing circles and arcs of circles.
Students were given the assignment to create a geometric window design that contained the following: up to 3 vertical lines, up to 3 horizontal lines, 2 diagonal lines, 2 circles (or partial circles), and 1 grid/checkerboard pattern. Students drew their designs first on drawing paper using rulers and compasses, and thickened in their lines. Students glued strips of black paper on a clear transparency that was taped to their designs on paper so they could follow them easily. They had to measure and re-draw their circle on black construction paper and add those as well. Lastly, we talked about the difference between transparent, translucent and opaque. Students used permanent marker in primary colors to color in three sections of their windows, maintaining good visual balance.
