About this School Project (1-2nd grade Art Club - Petrographs)
Students in art club explored petroglyphs and petrographs from around the world, and then created their own petrograph on a piece of flagstone. Students learned that a "petroglyph" is a form of rock art made by pre-historic people and created by removing part of a rock surface, such as incising, picking, carving, or abrading. A petrograph is a rock painting, often found in caves. Students discovered petroglyphs and petrographs have been found in all parts of the globe except Antarctica, with the highest concentrations in parts of Africa, Scandinavia, Siberia, southwestern North America, and Australia; many examples of petroglyphs found globally are dated to roughly 10,000 to 12,000 years ago, though some petroglyph sites in Australia are estimated to date back 20,000 years, and other examples of petroglyphs are estimated to be as old as 40,000 years!!

Students practiced drawing simple pictures (symbols) to represent different ideas: nature, family, activity or hobby, or big ideas such as love, hope, or friendship. Then they choose a symbol they felt was meaningful to them and enlarged it for their chosen stone. After drawing their symbol on the stone in pencil, students used white paint on lines and shapes in their artwork to create their petrograph.
